myanimelist.net/anime/6746/Durarara!!
If I had to use just one word to describe durarara I'd say it would be chaotic. There's just so much going on. So many characters, and so many plot elements that build upon them self every episode like a mountain leading up to an epic conclusion.
Durarara or DRRR!!! is about a wimpy kid that moved from the country to the city to go to highschool with his best friend. When he gets there, besides typical culture shock he find out that the city is filled with gangs, the supernatural, and crazy people strong enough to lift lamp posts out of the ground and use them as baseball bats. As the story progresses this wimpy kid gets tangled in a web of events that interrupt the peaceful life he hopes for.
Its very difficult to give a good summary of this series without giving away important plot elements. Durarara was made by the same people that did Baccano. While there is far less action in this series, after a few episodes you can see some obvious similarities in the way the lives and events of each of the characters overlaps. Durarara takes a few episodes to get into, in fact it started off so slow I dropped it, but it gets much better. Especially once you learn more about the anonymous online "gang" Dollar,s and about Celty, the Dullahan,
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dullahan
who is searching the city for her stolen head.
The mastermind behind all the events in the city believes that by manipulating all the powerful forces in the city he will start a modern day war that will summon Valkyries??? (The bad guy is a bit nuts)
There is a long list of well developed characters. Even though this series does have some supernatural elements, 90% of the characters are very "normal." The series is plot driven, I'd almost say its more of a mystery since there's alot of secrets that unfold in every episode, but it probably would fit better in the action genre.
On another note... Isaac and Miria from Baccano actually appear in Durarara. That alone made the series worth watching =D There's alot of other anime references as well... Jigoku Shoujo, Toradora, and even Yotsubato!!! (It may never get an anime... but just knowing it was mentioned in an anime makes me happy I guess )
Overall this is the best anime of the year so far I believe. Very little has come out that has met my expectations as well as this series.
